Chair Yoga Poses

CHAIR YOGA POSES

Love the idea of chair yoga, but don’t know what to expect? Here are some sample poses to get you moving.

Seated Twist

Turn sideways on your chair with your feet flat on the floor. Inhale deeply, and the exhale as you twist your torso towards the back of the chair. Rest your hands on the top of the chair and continue to breathe. For some added benefit, you can inhale and extend one arm back (the arm closest to your legs); it should feel like you’re unwinding from the twist into a gentle stretch. Return to the starting position, and repeat on the opposite side.

Butterfly Pose (variation)

Seated in the middle of your chair, spread your legs so that they are resting on the sides of the chair. Place your hands on the chair, next to your legs, for support. Lift your head slightly, gazing up, and focus on your breath. If you feel comfortable, you can progress to the forward fold variation. To do this, exhale as you bring your hands towards the floor and let your head hang down. It is not necessary that your hands touch the floor—if you feel a stretch with your hands in mid-air, rest there. Breathe.

You can repeat these poses a few times for increased benefit.
